About Us Northern Virginia Trail Riders (NVTR) is a nonprofit organization made up of motorcycle and ATV riders and enthusiasts. We draw our members primarily from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, although we do have members from outside the area. The focus of NVTR is to promote the sport of off-road motorcycle and ATV riding. NVTR was founded in 1970 and officially Chartered on June 29th, 1971. Our goal then, as it is now, is being able to benefit the sport - and ourselves! - by identifying riding areas, sponsoring competitions, fun events, and public awareness programs. The aim has always been to provide high quality riding experiences for our members. We have a continuing series of informal club rides. Normally one trail ride is scheduled each month. These are held at various locations, over a variety of terrain and again, the emphasis is fun. Club members volunteer to lead these rides and share some of their riding areas. NVTR hosts several formal events each year: - A fun event in March, such as an offroad poker run, trail ride match race, trials, or some combination of these;
- Together with other clubs, the ECEA Green Marble Enduro in June
- Over the first full weekend in October, the Shenandoah 500, a AMA KTM 2-Day National Dual Sport for street-legal dirt bikes.
NVTR is active on national, state, and local levels to secure trail-riding areas. We've worked with the George Washington National Forest in western Virginia for many years and have adopted the Taskers Gap ORV trail system near Edinburg, VA. We develop, maintain, and just plain roam around its 25+ miles of trails. We're negotiating with the Forest to increase the total miles of trail available for ATV and motorcycle use, and have received Syms National Recreation Trail Act funding for the project. We also explore possible access to private lands for NVTR member use. With the variety of competitions, dual sports, fun rides, and diversity of riding areas, there are events for riders of every skill level in interest. Many of our members are active competition riders and compete in enduros, hare scrambles and motocross. Others prefer to just ride for fun: dual sports, club rides, and weekend ventures.
We realize that the future of off-road riding is dependent on our public image. Our members believe in riding in a safe and responsible manner so that we can protect ourselves and our riding opportunities. We stress that the bikes and ATVs be properly equipped and maintained as well as ridden in an appropriate manner.
NVTR is a club run by its members for its members, and as such, the club activities are constantly being adjusted to match our own needs. The routine business of the club is conducted by the elected officers, with the concurrence of the members.
NVTR meets for one to two hours on the second Wednesday of each month. These meetings include both club business and a program of general interest - as well as a chance to just hang out with fellow trailhounds. Prospective members are encouraged to attend.
